The Hummers
September 4, 2007

I sat for a long time watching the hummingbirds hit the feeder in my yard.  They flit and flitter and sometimes all you see or hear is the hum of their wings as they fly in and fly out to the sweet nectar.

For their small stature they are a very aggressive, domineering little bird.  They fight and rule with an authority that is deceiving especially when compared with the other birds that inhabit my yard.  They rarely stay in one spot for very long and many times you hear them but never see them until they light to partake of the sweet juice in the feeder.

Sometimes I think my life mirrors a hummingbird's flight.  Fast paced, flitting from one spot to another, never in one place long enough to do much good I drop in, make an appearance, do my duty and run frantically to the next obligation.  Scurrying from one spot to another with reckless abandon I understand why the Hummer is a domineering little fighter bird.  He is trying to play catch up and or get ahead and it never happens.

I guess both the Hummer and I need to slow down for a moment.  Imagine what we might see, hear and experience if we weren't so busy flitting about.  We honestly might be surprised.  Living for the sweet nectar of life is fine unless we are in such a hurry that we miss the taste altogether.

What is the saying --Stop and smell the roses?

Be Blessed This Day!
